World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdraws from Cincinnati Open, puts US Open availability into question
Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked player in the world, has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open, the tournament announced on Sunday.
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said in a statement with the Cincinnati Open’s press release.

“My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet,” he added.
The Cincinnati Open begins on Aug. 11 with the finals scheduled for Aug. 23. That’s one week before the singles draw begins for the US Open, which could put in question Sinner’s availability for that Grand Slam tournament, which he won in 2024.
Sinner, 24, advanced to last year’s Cincinnati Open final but had to retire in the first set due to illness. That was the precursor to both players facing each other again three weeks later in the US Open final, with Alcaraz also prevailing in four sets.
Alcaraz, ranked No. 2, will also miss the event this week as he remains out with a wrist injury that’s kept him sidelined since April.
