Jannik Sinner withdraws from 2026 U.S. Open with a knee injury

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has announced he is pulling out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to a knee injury.

Sinner, last year’s U.S. Open runner-up and 2024 champion, said in a social media post that over the past few days he’s been doing on-court work, but that he needs more recovery time.

“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.

“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”

The 25-year-old Sinner, who has not missed a Grand Slam tournament since making his professional debut at the 2019 U.S. Open, has been out of action since winning Wimbledon last month.

Sinner’s second straight win at the All-England Club in July was his fifth major title and first tournament win of this season.

The decision to withdraw by Sinner comes one day after Carlos Alcaraz, who beat the Italian in last year’s U.S. Open final, announced he was returning following a four-month absence due to a wrist injury.

According to Sinner’s camp, he will remain in Europe to recover and is hoping to return when the ATP Tour heads to Asia in September.
