White House says tariffs will come to Canada on Feb. 1
The U.S. will enact punitive new tariffs Saturday, upholding pledges by President Donald Trump, the White House said Friday.
“The tariffs are incoming tomorrow on Canada,” White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Friday.
She said he will impose 25-per-cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and a 10-per-cent tariff on China.
“The reason for that is because both Canada and Mexico have allowed an unprecedented invasion of illegal fentanyl that is killing American citizens and also illegal immigrants into our country,” she said.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly pledged to impose those tariffs.
“Promises made and promises kept by the president,” Ms. McEnany said.
Further details will be available in 24 hours, she said.
She rebuffed as “false” several media reports that suggested Mr. Trump would not impose tariffs until March 1, with time to discuss exemptions.
