Election 2024

Walz says 'politics can sometimes bring out the worst' in people, but dogs 'bring out the best'

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), the Democratic nominee for vice president, said in a video Monday with the popular WeRateDogs account that while he believes “politics can sometimes bring out the worst” in people, he also believes dogs “bring out the best in us.”

“So, Americans seem to be more polarized than ever these days, but loving dogs seems to be pretty universal,” WeRateDogs head Matt Nelson says in the video with Walz. “Why do we love dogs?”

“Well, they give unconditional love,” Walz responds. “I said, I think, I do think they bring out the best in us. I think our politics can sometimes bring out the worst. I see it at a dog park, that rarely will people talk politics, they talk dogs and they talk about the weather, they talk about how lucky we are to be here, and I think that’s their great gift, that they have to us.”

In the video, Walz and Nelson walk and play with Walz’s dog, Scout, which he describes as “a rescue” and part Labrador Retriever, Boxer and Chow Chow. Walz said his dog “rescued us as much as we rescued him.”

Walz also encouraged video viewers to become dog owners and “get out there and vote this fall.”

The Democratic vice presidential nominee has featured his dog in social media posts before on the social platform X and TikTok.

CBS News is hosting a debate Tuesday night in which Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the Republican nominee for vice president, are set to go head-to-head.
