Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royal guide for Spring Training in Surprise, Arizona

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Spring is on the way which means baseball is back in the Valley.

Baseball officially returned in mid-February for most big league clubs, with pitchers and catchers working out at sites across Arizona and Florida.

The first Spring Training game at Surprise Stadium is Friday, Feb. 21 between the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. Here’s what you need to know:

There will be 30 Spring Training games at the stadium this year. The D-backs will play the Royals at Surprise Stadium on March 17 for any Arizona fans who want to see their team play before the regular season begins.

Surprise Stadium is at 15850 N. Bullard Avenue and is cashless, so be sure to bring your card. No outside alcoholic beverages are allowed but are sold at events. No animals, except service animals, are allowed. 

Bags must be clear or a small clutch. A clear, one-gallon plastic bag is also acceptable. Clear, plastic water bottles are allowed, as well as hydro flasks, but they must be empty at the gate. There are stations to fill up water bottles inside the gates. 

Blankets are acceptable but chairs are not allowed.

To end the Spring Training season, fans can attend the Out of the Park Music Fest at Mark Coronado Park featuring ERNEST, Chase Matthew, George Birge, Louie the Singer and Lauren Watkins on March 22. 

Ticket bundles to catch the last game and the concert start at just $38.

Gates for the music fest open at 2 p.m. and musical acts are scheduled to end around 10 p.m.

General Admission tickets are $40 and will increase to $50 the day of the festival. VIP tickets are $100 and supply is limited. 

The city of Phoenix is home to four major professional sports league teams; The NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, NBA’s Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cardinals have made State Farm Stadium in Glendale their home turf and the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix is home to both the Suns and the Mercury. The Indoor Football League’s Arizona Rattlers play at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. 

Phoenix also has a soccer team with the USL’s Phoenix Rising FC, who play at Phoenix Rising FC Stadium in Phoenix. 

The Valley hosts multiple major sporting events on a yearly basis, including college football’s Fiesta Bowl and Guaranteed Rate Bowl; the PGA Tour’s highest-attended event, the WM Phoenix Open; NASCAR events each spring and fall, including Championship Weekend in November; and Cactus League Spring Training for 15 Major League Baseball franchises.
