State Treasurer’s Office Hosts “Get a Life” Financial Literacy Simulation at Bridgeport Middle School

The West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office, under the leadership of Treasurer Larry Pack, hosted the final session of its “Get a Life” financial literacy simulation at Bridgeport Middle School this year on Tuesday, April 15. Thehands-on learning program gave eighth-grade students a real-world perspective on budgeting, decision-making, and the value of education.

Throughout the school year, the Harrison County Chamber of Commerce collaborated with the Harrison County Board of Education to recruit local businesses to participate in the simulation. Volunteers staffed various stations representing real-life expenses such as housing, transportation, insurance, childcare, and groceries.

Participating businesses at the Bridgeport Middle School session included Central Supply Company of West Virginia, MVB Bank, City of Bridgeport, WesBanco Bank, Lamar, United Security Agency, Region 6 Workforce, the WVU Extension Office, and the Assessor of Harrison County, Allen Ferree.

During the first round of the simulation, students were assigned a minimum wage job and challenged to make ends meet—purchasing a home, vehicle, groceries, insurance, fuel, furnishings, and more. In the second round, they were given a new career scenario reflecting the completion of secondary education—such as a bachelor’s degree, community college program, apprenticeship, or vocational training—demonstrating how further education can significantly impact income and financial stability.

The Chamber of Commerce would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Harrison County Board of Education, Dr. Geraldine Beckett, and the State Treasurer’s representatives Beth Rogers and Mark Harrison for continuing to serve the students and community with this impactful programming
