Sen. Ronald Caldwell defeats Trey ‘BoDirt’ Bohannan in Republican primary
Backed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trey ‘BoDirt’ Bohannan was hoping to defeat incumbent State Sen. Ronald Caldwell but ended up losing resoundingly.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Republicans in Arkansas hold a supermajority in both chambers of the state legislature, so primary challenges of incumbent lawmakers wouldn’t have such a big profile that the Senate District 10 has had.
That’s because Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has endorsed the challenger Trey ‘BoDirt’ Bohannan to unseat incumbent Sen. Ronald Caldwell. Sanders and her husband Bryan Sanders have been spotted ahead of the primary elections with Bohannan on the campaign trail.
In recent weeks, Bohannan has defended his association with a man who was convicted of internet stalking a teenager. He said that he’s given a “second chance to some who has made mistakes and been incarcerated to pay their debt to society.”
He has labeled the revelation an “attack” by his opponent and alleged that Caldwell has an “anti-Trump liberal record.”
Caldwell told the Arkansas Advocate that while he’s had disagreements with the Sanders administration, he notes he voted along with the governor “98% to 99% of the time.”
But being backed by Sanders did not stop voters from voting overwhelmingly for Caldwell and the Associated Press called the race for him.
Caldwell will not face a Democratic challenger in November, which means the winner will join the legislature in January 2027.
