Rogers intersection near Walmart AMP to undergo 90-day construction closure

The intersection of JB Hunt Drive, Northgate Road, and Champions Drive will be closed for 90 days starting Monday, Jan. 12.

ROGERS, Ark. — A major intersection near the Walmart AMP in Rogers is set to be shut down for three months as the city works to make the area more pedestrian friendly.

A release from the City of Rogers on Wednesday said the intersection of JB Hunt Drive, Northgate Road, and Champions Drive will be closed for 90 days starting Monday, Jan. 12.

The impacted roadways will be open to local traffic, just not at the intersection.

The city said the closure was timed to the AMP’s offseason to ensure impacts were minimized.

According to the release, the intersection is being reconstructed to be safer for pedestrians, have better traffic control, and to have improved functionality, particularly during AMP events.

Among the changes coming to the intersection are a new four-way stop, narrower crossing distances, and patterns to alert drivers that the area is pedestrian focused.

“These changes are about safety first,” Deputy Director of Engineering Lance Jobe said. “By raising the intersection, slowing traffic, and clearly defining pedestrian space, we’re creating an environment that works better for people walking, driving, and for officers managing traffic during peak AMP events.”

During the 90-day closure, drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes and plan for additional travel time.

“The city appreciates the public’s patience during construction and looks forward to delivering a safer, more functional intersection that supports future development and enhances the experience for residents and event patrons alike,” the release said.
