Popular Birmingham barbecue restaurant reopens after 2024 fire
A popular restaurant in Birmingham’s Lakeview district has reopened.
Moe’s Original BBQ, at 731 29th St. S., reopened today after renovation following a fire last June 15, according to posts on its social media channels.
A smoker caught fire that Saturday afternoon, closing the restaurant.
No one was injured in the fire, which left extensive smoke and water damage to the building.
Cody Sellers, the restaurant general manager, said there will be several aspects to the renovation that should excite customers. Moe’s was situated in what originally had been a house built in the early 1900s.
“The place being so old, we needed to create some more functional space,” he said. We made the patio on one level, took out some walls, and put in a new bar.”
In addition, workers added another garage door, and opened up the interior through the use of doors and walls. More taps were also added to the draft system.
Sellers said the most important thing was being patient and trying not to “fix” some elements that gave the restaurant character.
“The place has wants and needs, but it was about trying not to do too much,” he said.
The restaurant has kept fans informed of its renovation since. Back in January, Moe’s replaced its original smoker using a crane.
Moe’s Original BBQ opened in Lakeview in 2009. There are locations in 13 states and 18 throughout Alabama, according to the website.
