Istanbul on the fault lines: Turkey prepares for massive earthquake




Turkey sits on one of the world’s two most active fault lines, which means numerous devastating earthquakes have claimed thousands of lives and reshaped entire cities. Turkish history is still marked by the Erzincan earthquake in 1939 and the Izmit earthquake of 1999. Today, all eyes are on Istanbul, the home of over 16 million residents, where experts warn that a destructive earthquake could strike the city any time within the next few years.
