Hero Doughnuts & Buns opens eighth location near major Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery
Hero Doughnuts & Buns is bringing its brioche doughnuts, buns and more to Alabama’s capital city with a new location near one of its most popular attractions.
Hero Doughnuts & Buns opened its new Montgomery store, located at 350 North Perry Street across from Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and Legacy Plaza, this morning, offering downtown visitors and residents a much-needed breakfast and lunch option.
Hero got its start in the Birmingham area in 2017 when Birmingham chef Wil Drake opened its first location in Homewood. Since then, the eatery — which serves an eclectic menu of unique doughnut flavors, burgers and more, all made with its signature French brioche — has opened eight stores in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia.

“We’re super excited to have our eighth location here in Montgomery,” Drake said at the opening. “It’s a very fun menu. It’s all from memories of my childhood, all my recipes. We make everything in-house from scratch. Our main focus is our dough, so we are all about the dough that we make, our brioche dough, we use that for our buns, our hamburgers and sandwiches, even for our homemade doughnuts.”
Open 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., Hero’s lunch offerings include its popular “super crunch” chicken sandwich, which consists of fried chicken breast, pepper jam, pickles and is specialty “cracked sauce,” as well as burgers, including the Hero cheeseburger that AL.com named one of the top 5 burgers in Birmingham in 2023, milkshakes, salads and more.

Hero is part of the Pihakis Restaurant Group, which partnered with the Equal Justice Initiative to help fulfill a need for dining options within walking distance of its sites. Little Donkey, another Pihakis Restaurant Group, is slated to open next door in the coming weeks.
“This is desperately needed in downtown Montgomery,” said Equal Justice Initiative’s Executive Director Bryan Stevenson during the opening. “We partnered with these wonderful folks because we have thousands of visitors coming to our sites, and a lot of times, they’re wandering around looking for places to eat. We are very excited to bring a quality establishment like Hero to downtown Montgomery.”
