Delta offers $30K to passengers on plane that crashed in Toronto

TORONTO, ON — Delta Air Lines is offering $30,000 to passengers who were on the plane that crashed Monday afternoon at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

A spokesperson with Delta confirmed the offer, adding that it comes with “no strings attached and does not affect rights.”

Officials say 76 passengers were on board the CRJ-900 jet, operated by Delta subsidiary Endeavor Airlines when it flipped over on the runway while attempting to land. Delta said 21 people were injured, and only one remains hospitalized.

“Delta and Endeavor teams remain in Toronto and are cooperating fully as participants in the investigation,” Delta said in a statement. “Maintenance teams are standing by to remove the aircraft from the runway Wednesday once it’s safe to do so.”

Passengers on the plane described the scene as “mass chaos” after the aircraft tipped over on the run at approximately 2:15 p.m. EST. Investigators say communication between the tower and the pilot was normal, so it’s unclear what went wrong during the landing.

“At this point, it’s far too early to say what the cause of this accident might be,” Ken Webster, a senior investigator for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, said in a video statement Tuesday.

Emergency personnel reached the plane within a few minutes and Toronto Pearson Fire Chief Todd Aitken said the response “went as planned.” He also said, “The runway was dry and there were no cross-wind conditions.”
