Child dies after being hit by suspected DUI driver in Avondale, police say



The driver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

AVONDALE, Ariz. — A child died after being hit by a car while crossing a road in Avondale on Monday night, according to the city’s police department. 

Avondale officers were called to an area near 107th Avenue and Thomas Road for reports of a serious crash. Officers learned that a car was going through the intersection when it hit an 11-year-old who was crossing the street, officials said. 

The child was taken to a nearby hospital but died shortly after arriving.

The driver stayed at the scene but was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, officials said. 

The intersection is restricted while Avondale police’s traffic unit investigates the crash.
