Bryan Ellis: Alabama expected to make offensive coaching change
Alabama is set to need a new tight ends coach.
The current expectation is that Bryan Ellis, who spent two seasons coaching the Alabama tight ends, will shift to coaching quarterbacks in 2026, sources with knowledge of the situation told AL.com. Football Scoop first reported the news.
Ellis came to Alabama once offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb went back to Seattle and took the Seahawks coaching job. Tight ends coach Nick Sheridan was then promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2024 season, opening the spot for Ellis.
Sheridan, who was the co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the Crimson Tide in 2025, left to become the offensive coordinator for Michigan State. That opened the quarterback coaching job for Ellis, who has extensive experience coaching the position at Georgia Southern, Western Kentucky and Southern Cal.
Ellis is a former quarterback himself, having played at UAB, graduating in 2011.
Ellis, a Georgia native, joined the Crimson Tide from Georgia Southern, where he served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2023. The 2023 team had a top-30 passing offense.
Before then, Ellis filled his second stint at Western Kentucky from 2019 to 2021. First from 2019-20, he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. His final season, Ellis became the co-offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach. The 2021 Western Kentucky offense finished second among FBS teams with 44.2 points per game.
Before his second stint in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Ellis spent two seasons at Southern Cal where he worked as quarterbacks coach in 2018 and quality control in 2017.
From 2014 to 2016, he spent his first stop at Western Kentucky. He was first in quality control, then he became the running backs coach before finishing as the passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach.
Ellis started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UAB from 2012-13.
During his time with the Crimson Tide, Ellis coached players such as Robbie Ouzts, CJ Dippre and Josh Cuevas. The first two are in the NFL now and Cuevas could join them.
