Area Man who was Educator as well as a Long-Time State Public Servant, Charles Edward Capet, Passes



Charles Edward “Cap” Capet was born on October 3, 1947 to the late Helen Rauer Capet and Charles Louis Capet of Farmington WV. He passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025 at Fairmont Regional Medical Center. 


 


Cap graduated from Farmington High School in 1965 and earned his degree from Fairmont State University in 1969 where he was a proud member of Sigma Pi fraternity. During his high school and college years he worked for the Fairmont Hotel. 


 

He dedicated his early career to education, teaching social studies at Greenbrier East High School in Lewisburg WV and at Miller Junior High School in Fairmont. Cap then transitioned to a distinguished career in West Virginia public service. He served as Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary of State for A. James Manchin and later the State Treasurer’s Office. He concluded his service with the WV Dept of Environmental Protection retiring in 1997. 


 


Cap is survived by his son, Chad Edward Capet, his wife Mandy and their daughter Ava Marie Capet of Corsicana TX, his daughter Dr. Christy Lynne Capet, her wife Jessica and their son Jordan Schoening of Austin TX and the mother of his children, Nancy Capet-Davis also of Corsicana. 


 


He is also survived by his sister, Cathy Capet Maxwell and her husband Terry of Fairmont whose care and support in recent years meant the world to him, his step siblings Diane Sypult Schneider and Craig [Monica Lenise] Sypult. Cap leaves behind 2 nephews, Jeffrey Maxwell and his wife Melissa, their 2 sons Nathan and Kaden Maxwell and Benjamin Maxwell, his wife Tricia and their daughters Caroline, Jocelyn, Maggie and Shelby all of Fairmont. 


 


In his later years Cap shared a special friendship with Mary Ann Binnix, whose companionship brought him comfort and joy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece Tiffany Capet Maxwell, his stepfather Clyde C Sypult and stepbrothers Clyde W and Michael Sypult. 


 


Arrangements have been entrusted to Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554. Per his wishes, cremation will take place. A private Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory with stories and laughter he so enjoyed.
