AHSAA soccer playoffs: Gardendale boys upend No. 2 Mountain Brook
Gardendale’s Mikey Pribyl scored the game-winning goal with 8 minutes remaining as the seventh-ranked Rockets upset No. 2 Mountain Brook 3-1 in a boys Class 6A soccer quarterfinal on Thursday. Chris Bean had the assist on Pribyl’s second goal of the match at Mountain Brook.
The wins sends Gardendale (20-3-2) to the Alabama High School Athletic Association state tournament for the first time in boys program history. The Rockets will meet the survivor from the Randolph at Southside-Gadsden contest, set for Friday at 6 p.m., in the AHSAA semifinals in Huntsville.
Pribyl’s game-winner came less than a minute after Mountain Brook (22-4-2) had scored to tie the game at 1-all.
Pribyl scored earlier in the first half and Wyatt Chandler scored on a penalty kick with 4:11 to go for Gardendale’s insurance goal.
Mountain Brook played the entire second half a man down after a player received a second yellow card.
The game was delayed for 90 minutes because of lightning, stopping play with 25:27 to go in the first half.
