Colorado voters will decide if ballot measures should be written at an 8th grade reading level

Colorado voters will decide in November whether the state constitution should be amended to require that future ballot measures be written in plain language and understandable by people who can read at an eighth grade level. 

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office said Friday afternoon that the backers of Initiative 234 collected enough voter signatures to get the question on the November ballot. 

The measure was brought by Advance Colorado, a conservative political nonprofit that doesn’t reveal its donors. There has been no organized opposition to the initiative thus far. 

Initiative 234 needs the support of at least 55% of voters to pass since it would add language to the state constitution. It will be among at least 13 questions on the statewide ballot in November.
