Bridgeport Woman who Owned and Operated Iconic Main Street Business, Alice Carolina Hoy, Passes
Alice Carolina Hoy, 73, of Bridgeport, WV, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at United Hospital Center following a courageous battle with complications from esophageal cancer.
Alice was a Christian and held her faith close to her heart. She found strength in her faith throughout her life and especially during her courageous battle with illness.
Alice was a graduate of RW High School. She worked at Union National Bank in Clarksburg and later owned and operated Batman’s Trophies and Awards in Bridgeport for 20 years.
Alice enjoyed traveling, bingo, playing cards with her card group, and attending her grandchildren’s extracurricular activities. She especially treasured being involved in the lives of her grandchildren and never wanted to miss an opportunity to cheer them on.
Alice is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Gary Hoy of Bridgeport. Together, they built a wonderful life filled with love, family, and countless memories. She is also survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Hoy Sampson, and her husband, Jamie, of Bridgeport; and her two grandchildren, Alexis Hoy and Case Sampson, of Bridgeport. She leaves behind her beloved dogs, Willow and Oakley, who will miss her dearly, and is reunited with her precious Ty, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge before her. Her dogs were truly family and held a very special place in her heart.
Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren, Lexie and Case. They were not only her grandchildren, but her best friends. The special bond they shared with their mamaw was truly precious. She was a constant source of love, encouragement, laughter, and comfort in their lives, and the memories they made together will be cherished forever.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Orth Stout and Mary Elizabeth Callahan Stout, and her stepfather, James F. Tomblin.
The Hoy family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the CCU staff at United Hospital Center for their unwavering care, compassion, and support throughout Alice’s illness. Alex Cross, Courtney Cochran, and Rachel Harris were just a few of the many who went above and beyond and became like family to us. Their kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.
Alice will be deeply missed by her husband, daughter, grandchildren, son in law, extended family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. Her love, faith, and memory will live on through the family she cherished so deeply.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Saturday, from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m., where services will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Charles Madaus presiding. Interment will follow in Stonewall Park Cemetery.
