Former Harrison and Other Counties Superintendent, Veteran, Business Owner, James Bennett, Passes



James Edward “JEB” Bennett, 90, of Clarksburg passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center.


 


He was born in Buckhannon on March 21, 1935, the only child of the late Nobel Sterling and Lois Lorene Flowers Bennett.


 

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Bennett of Ohio; one daughter, Libby Jarom and her husband Chris of Clarksburg; three grandchildren, Alexandria Osborn and her husband Josh of Fairview, Victoria Jarom of Midland, TX and Bennett Allen Jarom of Morgantown.


 


He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jo Bennett.


 


Mr. Bennett was a graduate of Washington Irving High School and received his master’s degree from West Virginia University. He worked for over 40 years in education for the Harrison County Board of Education as a teacher and vice principal at Victory High School, then as a teacher and principal for WIHS, and then as the very involved and beloved superintendent for Upshur, Harrison, Doddridge and Berkeley County schools. In addition, he owned and operated Bennett Corporation, a sawmill in Doddridge County and was a general manager for Breckenridge Construction. Mr. Bennett was also a United States Army Veteran.


 


Mr. Bennett was a member of the Clarksburg Kiwanis Club, Clarksburg Council No. 872 Knights of Columbus; Adamston Lions Club, Buckhannon Rotary Club, WV Secondary Schools Activities Commission, Sons of the American Revolution, WV Education Association Delegate Assembly, WV Secondary Principals Task Force, and was chosen to represent the state of WV at the Columbia University Annual Superintendent Conference. He was also named Upshur County Outstanding Citizen of the Year.


 


JEB enjoyed hunting and loved spending time at his farm in Upshur County that he named “Sugar Hill”. He also liked to travel to Florida and stay at his home there.


 


Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Monday, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at 11:00 am.


 


In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Bennett will be cremated following the service. Inurnment will be held in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at a later date.
