Joy Reid’s MSNBC show canceled as network makes ‘major’ changes

MSNBC has canceled commentator Joy Reid’s “The ReidOut” program, according to multiple reports on Sunday.

Reid has been a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, authoring a book titled, “The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling of the American Story.”

She attracted notice in Alabama in November when she referred to newly elected Congressman Shomari Figures, D-Mobile, as one of the “big stars” of the incoming class of legislators.

As of Sunday morning, MSNBC’s webpage for “The ReidOut” listed the show as appearing weeknights at 7 p.m. Eastern. But The New York Times reported that the show was being canceled as “part of a far-reaching programming overhaul orchestrated by Rebecca Cutler, the network’s new president.”

The NYT report said the final episode of the 5-year-old show will air sometime this week. The time slot will be taken by a show featuring hosts Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez, who currently cohost an MSNBC weekend show.

Variety.com reported that the shakeup at MSNBC also will involve Alex Wagner, Jen Psaki and others. Both NBC and Variety said MSNBC had declined to comment on the changes.

The departure of Reid was welcomed by some outlets on the right, with the National Review describing Reid as someone known for “peddling far-left narratives involving identity politics and progressive ideologies” who has “has used her platform over the past many years to show disdain for Trump and Republican supporters.”
