Man convicted in 2021 shooting that killed 1, wounded 3 at Pickens County home

A 31-year-old year man has been convicted in a 2021 Pickens County shooting that left one person dead, and three others injured.

The jury on Friday found Jeremy Lynn Colvin guilty of murder, three counts of attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm, said 24th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Andy Hamlin.

Killed was 21-year-old Venson Lamont Barnes.

The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. on May 30, 2021, at a home on Seventh Street N.W. in Aliceville.

Police found Barnes unresponsive in the kitchen and the remaining victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Hamlin said all of the survivors identified Colvin as the shooter.

Hamlin and Chief Assistant District Attorney Jack Nolen prosecuted the case. The Elizabeth Hunter Law Firm represented Colvin.

Judge Sam Junkin set a sentencing date for April 2.

The case was investigated by the Pickens Couty Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Investigations division. Aliceville, Reform and Gordo police also assisted.

“The jury’s verdict represents justice for Venson Barnes and lived ones, who have shown tremendous strength throughout this difficult process,’’ Hamlin said. “I am grateful to the survivors who came forward to testify, helping ensure that the person responsible for this senseless violence is held accountable.”
