Fire breaks out at Maha Kumbh mela: What we know so far

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out in the Maha Kumbh Mela area in Prayagraj on Sunday, leading to the burning of several tents. The fire broke out at 4:00 pm due to a cylinder blast, officials said.
“Two cylinders exploded in Sector 19 of the Maha Kumbh Mela, causing a massive fire in the camps. Fire fighters are trying to douse the blaze,” Akhara Police Station in-charge Bhaskar Mishra was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath visited the site of the fire and spoke to officials and fire fighting teams on the spot.
The fire erupted near the Shastri bridge in zone 19 of the mela. “The fire broke out in sector 19 in the tent of Gita press. The fire spread to the nearby 10 tents. The police and administration team reached the spot,” Ravindra Kumar, DM, Prayagraj said while talking to news agency ANI.

Fire brigade teams were immediately dispatched to the spot and the fire had been doused.

No casualties or injuries have been reported so far. “There is no loss of life. Loss of property has been reported, it is being surveyed. There are no injuries also, as of now. Our priority as of now is the evacuation of the people and their safety. Around 15 fire tenders are present at the spot. CM Yogi also reviewed the situation. All the senior officials are present at the spot,” Maha Kumbh Mela deputy inspector general of Police, Vaibhav Krishna told news agency ANI.
Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an aerial survey of the Maha Kumbh area.
The 45-day Maha Kumbh 2025 started on Paush Purnima on January 13.
