3 years on, National Medical Commission makes public assets of 7 of its 33 members | India News

After dragging its feet for three years, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has finally uploaded the assets declaration of seven members on its website.
NMC has, however, uploaded assets of only the chairperson, presidents of four autonomous boards of the commission – UG Medical Education Board, PG Medical Education Board, Medical Assessment & Rating Board and Ethics & Medical Registration Board – and full time members of the boards. However, NMC Act mandates that all 33 members – chairperson, ten ex-officio members and 22 part-time members, declare their assets on the commission’s website.
The Act stipulates that each member has to make a declaration of assets and liabilities at the time of entering office and while demitting office. Many members completed their tenure and demitted office without their asset declaration being made public. For instance, first chairperson of NMC, Dr SC Sharma, completed his tenure without his asset declaration being uploaded on the website. From the declarations uploaded, it appears that some members declared their assets when they entered office, which, in the case of some, was when NMC was constituted in September 2020. However, it was uploaded on the website only now.
RTI activist and ophthalmologist Dr KV Babu welcomed the uploading of assets of even a few members as a “good start” made possible by the intervention of the PMO.
